Return to American River

Situated right on the foreshore of the fishing village of American River, just metres from the wharf, boat ramp, tennis courts and children's playground, the Schoolhouse Cottage is a great location for your holiday on Kangaroo Island. Being midway between Penneshaw and Kingscote, you are also well positioned for exploring the rest of Kangaroo Island.

Early last century the cottage was once the local school. A modern rear section has been recently added, sympathetic to the original style. Accommodation is for up to six people, in three bedrooms (with one queen size bed, one double bed and two single beds). There is a well-appointed kitchen, spacious eating area, cosy lounge and north facing outdoor patio with barbecue and views over American River and Eastern Cove. There is undercover parking for two cars and fish cleaning facilities are now available.

The local waters are very sheltered and are ideal for all boating activities, including fishing, for which the area is renowned. Adjacent is Pelican Lagoon, a marine reserve, and a haven for fish and birds.

No boat? You can throw in a line off the wharf for your dinner, or perhaps you might like to buy some freshly harvested local oysters. Or you may prefer one of the fishing charters that leave from the wharf each day.

The bird life is abundant on both sea and land, with numerous species from large pelicans and swans on the foreshore, to the likes of the small and beautiful Splendid Blue wren in the garden.

For those so inclined, there are scenic walking trails, where you can see Tamar wallabies, possums and echidnas. The wallabies also graze the grassy verges of the town's streets in the evenings.
