Located at the Wellington Caves Complex is the Phosphate Mine. The mine dates back
to 1913, with 6,000 tons of phosphate mined during its 5 years of operation.
The phosphate was used as a fertiliser.
During the last 80 years the mine and associated caves have played host to
numerous interested people. However work on the restoration and refurbishment
of the mine as a tourist attraction began in 1995.
A unique feature is the mine's accessibility to those in wheelchairs and the
elderly.
A tour of the mine takes 1 1/2 hours to complete (approximately).
Entry to the Phosphate Mine is only permitted to persons wearing suitable
footwear (no bare feet, thongs or sandals).
There are no stairs so it is easy for everybody to enjoy the wonders of
the underground, with both mine and cave features in the one attraction.
Minimum party size is 2 adults and maximum party size is 25 persons per tour.
Hard hats are supplied.
