Return to Blanchetown

Brookfield is located on the Sturt Highway 34 kilometres east of Truro and 11 kilometres west of Blanchetown. This park was a gift to South Australia from the Chicago Zoological Society. The gently undulating limestone country is an ideal habitat for the Hairy-nosed Wombat, Fat-tailed Dunnart and Red Kangaroo which share the park with prolific bird life including the rare Stone Curlew, Ground Cuckoo Shrikes and Australian Owlet Nightjars. Vegetation in the park comprises open scrubland of Red Mallee, Mallee Box and Yorrell over the northern eastern half with Oil Bush and Sugarwood over Native Boxthorn and Bullock Bush covering most of the remainder. Camping is not permitted but facilities for bushwalking include a gas barbecue and toilets, which are adjacent to the walking track. Ample water and fuel must be carried. Although access can be gained by conventional vehicle some areas are restricted due to research on the Hairy-nosed Wombat.
