Bernier and Dorre Islands, situated in Shark Bay are important habitats where threatened animal species still survive.

The islands are home to five of the most threatened mammals in Australia, including three species which no longer naturally occur anywhere else in the world; the mala, the banded hare wallaby and the western barred bandicoot.

Altogether, Shark Bay is home to 16 threatened species. It is also home to one eighth of the world's total dugong population, and some of the most important loggerhead turtle nesting areas in Western Australia.
