Return to Denham

The Wooramel Seagrass Bank covers approximately 1000 square kilometres from the east coast of Shark Bay almost to Carnarvon. It contains one of the world's largest organically formed carbonate deposits in a modern environment.

These limestone sands are known as ooid shoals and are formed by precipitation of calcium carbonate from hypersaline (very salty) waters.

Seagrasses have been important in the long term evolution of the sedimentary environments of Shark Bay and are a vital component in the balance of life in the marine environment.
