DESTINATION: BallinaBallina lies inside the breakwaters of the Richmond River. The area is the traditional home of the Bandjalung Aboriginal people. Capt Henry Rous named the Richmond River in 1828. Cedar-cutters were the first settlers in the area and the town was gazetted in 1856. Sugar and dairy farms were established in the 1860s and continue as major local industries, along with fishing and boat building. The tourism boom of the 1960s saw the town develop into a major attraction centred on its idyllic beaches, the river and attractive hinterland. Ballina also has very good markets, cafes and restaurants. Main AttractionsThe Big Prawn Complex on the Pacific Hwy is an instantly recognisable landmark and a sign of the town's busy fishing industry. It has an Opal and Gem Museum as well as arts and crafts and fresh seafood. Other attractions in Ballina include the Naval and Maritime Museum in Regatta Ave and the Kerry Saxby Cycleway and Walkway. River cruises, whale- and dolphin-watching cruises and parasailing are also popular as well as water-based recreational activities like fishing, surfing and swimming. |
