DESTINATION: Batemans Bay

Batemans Bay

Located at the mouth of the Clyde River, Batemans Bay is a fishing town and holiday destination; only 152km from Canberra, so it attracts many visitors from the capital. The town is also a service centre for the surrounding hinterland, which produces timber, dairy products and vegetables.

Main Attractions

The beaches, rivers and lakes are prime attractions. Lunchtime river cruises, fishing charters and houseboat hire are all available. Boat ramps give boat owners easy access to the Clyde River or the ocean. The Old Court House Museum displays local history through collections of photographs and memorabilia.

Nearby attractions

South of Batemans Bay is the old gold-mining region of Mogo. Old Mogo Town is a re-creation of a 19th-century gold town and is open daily. Visitors can see a blacksmith's shop and forge, an ore-crushing plant, tavern and Cobb & Co freight station. In the same area is Mogo Zoo. Open daily, 9am-5pm, the zoo specialises in Australian native animals and wild cats, successfully breeding snow leopards. The Eurobodalla Nature and Botanic Gardens are located approximately 7km south of Batemans Bay at Deep Creek Dam. The gardens are open Wednesdays, Sundays and school holidays and offer visitors the chance to enjoy the native flora. There are 2 national parks close to the town. Budawang NP in the hinterland is part of the eastern scarp of the Southern Highlands. It is small, rugged, remote and with no facilities. Murramarang NP, extending along the coast 20km to the north, is a more popular recreation area offering sandy beaches, surfing, rock and beach fishing, and gentle walks.
