DESTINATION: BathurstAustralia's oldest inland settlement, Bathurst, is a thriving rural area with education being the city's largest industry. The main campus of Charles Sturt University, 2 TAFE campuses, 4 private and 2 public high schools are all located here. It is also well-known for its car-racing circuit, Mount Panorama. In October the Bathurst (Supertourers) Car Races are held and in November it's the famous Bathurst 1000 V8 Supercar Race. Main AttractionsBen Chifley, Prime Minister of Australia from 1945 to 1949, was born in Bathurst. Located at 10 Busby Street, Chifley Home is open to the public Tuesday to Saturday 2pm-4pm and Sunday, 10am-12 noon. Also worthwhile visiting is Miss Triall's House and Garden; a house museum recording 100 years of family life. Miss Ida Triall bequeathed her colonial Georgian house to the National Trust. The National Motor Racing Museum, located at Murray's Cnr, is where you can experience the excitement of past motor racing, with displays, videos, photographs and memorabilia. Visitors can arrange to drive the famous international Mount Panorama Motor Racing Circuit. There are many parks in Bathurst. Machattie Park was developed in the late 19th century and visitors can enjoy the bandstand, fountain, fern house and duck ponds. Macquarie River Bicentennial Park is a popular site for picnics. It offers covered tables, BBQs, children's play areas, lovely gardens and the Heritage Wall. |

The Bathurst Goldfields, a reconstruction of the historic gold-mining area, are located south-west of the city centre. The former goldfield, Hill End, still has many original buildings and has inspired paintings by John Olsen and Brett Whiteley. It is about 86km NW of Bathurst. Abercrombie Caves, 72km to the south, has camping areas and features the largest natural limestone bridge in the Southern Hemisphere.
