DESTINATION: BegaThis picturesque town is located in prime dairy country, 431km south of Sydney, at the junction of the Princes and Snowy Mountains hwys linking Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne. Main AttractionsLookouts around Bega include the Dr George, 8km to the NE, and Bega Valley, 2km north, and offer views of the Bega River winding around the town. The Bega Co-operative Cheese Factory is open daily 9am-5pm. Here visitors can watch the cheese-making process and sample the products. A Heritage Centre displays early cheese-making equipment and there is also a cafe and art gallery. The Grevillea Estate Winery is 5km west of Bega, on Buckajo Rd. Open for tastings, the winery also has a restaurant. Children can watch cows being milked on the Rotolactor and meet farm animals. Leaflets describing Bega's historic walk are available from the information centre. Stops include the Court House (1881), the Old Bega Hospital Complex (now a cultural centre) and Bega Family Museum. The museum, a building that was once the Bega Family Hotel, displays pioneer memorabilia and local crafts. The museum is located on the corner of Bega and Auckland sts. |

In summer it is worthwhile visiting Mumbulla Falls with its many rockpools. The falls are located in the hills 15km NW of the town. Tathra is the closest beach to Bega. At one end of the beach is the mouth of the Bega River. The original 1860s wharf still stands and the old cargo shed houses a maritime and history museum.
