Berry

Known as 'The Town of Trees', Berry is a picturesque town with beautiful deciduous trees, planted at the turn of the 19th century, lining its streets. Located on the Princes Hwy, 16km north of Nowra, Berry is popular as a weekend getaway and offers many B&B's, guesthouses and motels.

There are plenty of activities available in Berry; walking, horseriding, cycling and 4 local wineries are open for tastings and sales. Many of Berry's heritage buildings have been renovated and now house cafes, antique shops, nurseries, and art and craft galleries.

Alexander Berry, the district's first and most prominent settler, constructed Coolangatta Estate, a private village in 1822. It has been beautifully restored and is now a resort open to the public. The old Coolangatta schoolhouse has become Coolangatta Craft Centre, featuring wood and folk art, hand-blown glass and pottery. It is open Wed-Mon, 9am-5pm and daily during school holidays.

The Illawarra the name is an adaptation of an Aboriginal word meaning between the high place and the sea, has Wollongong as its centre and is flanked by the Tasman Sea shores and the Illawarra Escarpment.
