Broken Hill

This city is located 1158km west of Sydney and operates on South Australian time. Broken Hill remains one of the world's great mining centres, despite its downsizing in recent years.


Main Attractions

Broken Hill attracted many well-known Australian artists (the 'Brushmen of the Bush') during the 1970s. Showrooms and art galleries are now a feature of the city. Pro Hart's Gallery at 108 Wyman St displays his own work together with his private collection. The City Art Gallery, on the corner of Blende and Chloride sts, features European and Aboriginal art, and works by local artists. The Big Picture at Silver City Mint and Art Centre is the world's largest acrylic painting on canvas measuring 12m by 100m.

The Living Desert Reserve, 6km from the city on Nine Mile Rd, displays the Living Desert Sculptures; 12 works of art by international artists dedicated to renowned eye surgeon, Fred Hollows. Delprats Underground Mine Tours is near the Line of Lode Miners' Memorial. Day Dream Mine on the Silverton road, 33km NW, is a pioneers' mine, discovered in 1881, that offers underground tours. Silverton, known as 'Hollywood of the Outback', is popular with tourists. It is a virtual ghost town and was used as the setting for movies like Mad Max.
