DESTINATION: Cobar

Cobar

Cobar is known for the mineral wealth; copper, zinc, lead and silver; extracted from its mines. The Great Cobar mine closed in 1919 but the opening up of new mining ventures in more recent times has seen Cobar become prosperous once again. Wool is also a major industry. The town is 723km NW of Sydney and is a rest stop on the way to Broken Hill.

Main Attractions

Brochures on the self-guided heritage walks are available from the information centre. There are also heritage tours by bus. The Great Western Hotel in Marshall St has the longest iron-lace verandah in New South Wales. There is a water recreation area accessed off Knight Dr, where visitors can enjoy swimming, picnics, waterskiing and birdwatching in a relaxing setting.

Mount Drysdale, a ghost mining town 30km north on the Kidman Way, was once home to 6000 people. Stone foundations are all that is left of the town, but the area has walk-in mines, Aboriginal waterholes and a ruined homestead to explore. The Mount Grenfell Historic Site has Aboriginal cave paintings and is located 40km west on the Barrier Hwy.
