DESTINATION: Coffs Harbour

Coffs Harbour

A very attractive holiday destination, Coffs Harbour is an area of contrasts: beaches, high mountains, dense rainforest and banana plantations.

Main Attractions

Long stretches of sand and surf have been drawing visitors to Coffs Harbour for decades. Park, Jetty and Boambee beaches edge the city, and to the north some hideaway beaches include Moonee, Emerald and Sandy. The Big Banana theme park is perhaps the most popular tourist attraction. Hard to miss with its huge concrete banana on the Pacific Hwy, north of town, it is open daily. There are plantation tours, hydroponics' exhibitions, a toboggan run, banana barn, food, souvenirs and a lookout; something for the whole family to enjoy. The Pet Porpoise Pool has performing dolphins and sea-lions, with shows daily, every day of the year. There is also a native fauna sanctuary and a reef tank. Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve is an excellent spot to see whales and muttonbirds in season.

Coffs Harbour Zoo, located 10 minutes drive north of the city, allows visitors to hand-feed kangaroos and waterbirds, see a koala presentation, visit the animal nursery and walk through a rainforest aviary. Bruxner Park Flora Reserve, 9km NW of Coffs Harbour has a walking track through a mass of vines, ferns and orchids. The Vincent Tree (flooded gum) is a major attraction, and from Sealy Lookout there are panoramic views of the city, coastline and hills. Dorrigo NP is in the hinterland ranges and there are many rainforest walks, with a diversity of flora and fauna. George's Goldmine is located near Coramba, 40km NW of Coffs Harbour, and offers a guided tour into a tunnel mine and demonstrations of a working stamper battery. There are also picnic areas and food is available.
