DESTINATION: Cooma

Cooma

Being the gateway to the Snowy Mountains resorts and Kosciuszko NP, and located at the junction of 2 highways linking Canberra, the coast and the mountains, Cooma is a busy tourist centre. The town is also the administrative centre for the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme.

Main Attractions

Centennial Park is particularly worthwhile visiting. There is the International Avenue of Flags in honour of the people from 27 nations who worked on the Snowy River Scheme in the 1950s; a statue of Banjo Paterson's Man From Snowy River; and the Monaro Time Walk, a series of 40 mosaic murals depicting the history of the region. Nannygoat Hill is a reserve in the centre of Cooma with a 360? view of the Monaro district and the Snowy Mountains. Mount Gladstone also offers a panoramic view. Cooma's oldest street, Lambie St, has many buildings classified by the National Trust. These can be seen on the self-guided Lambie Town Walk; a 5km walk beginning at the visitors centre. Cooma's original Anglican Church, Christ Church, built in 1845, can be seen in Church Rd. Cooma Gaol Museum offers tours on weekdays at 11am and 1pm and should be booked through the information centre. Located in Vale St, the museum is open Mon-Sat, 10am-4pm.

Part of the New South Wales section of the Great Dividing Range, the Snowy Mountains are approximately 160km long and 80km wide. Much of the rugged terrain is 900m or more above sea level, with the mountainous ridge rising to 2228m at Mount Kosciuszko, the highest point in Australia. Although the Snowy Mountains are situated in New South Wales, they are close to the Australian Capital Territory and their southern boundary extends to the Victorian border. more
