DESTINATION: CorowaA rich wheat-growing district surrounds the New South Wales town of Corowa, located on the northern bank of the Murray River. The town was also the birthplace of Australia's Federation. On the other side of the river is the Victorian town of Wahgunyah, joined to Corowa by the John Foord Bridge. Main AttractionsWatersports are popular, including boating, waterskiing and fishing. Heritage buildings with iron-lace balconies, built in the heyday of the river trade, line Corowa's Sanger St and give the town its character. The historic Court House has an important place in Australian history. It was here during the 1893 Federation Conference Meeting that the decision was made to draw up a constitution for the new nation. The Corowa Federation Museum focuses on the full history of the Federation movement and also displays a collection of farming implements and machinery from the early part of the 20th century. A collection of works by the Australian artist Tom Roberts is housed here, along with sketches by Aboriginal artist Tommy McRae. |
