Crookwell

Situated high in the Great Dividing Range, 230km SW of Sydney, Crookwell is the centre of some of Australia's best agricultural and pastoral land. It is also the birthplace of the Australian potato industry (1828). High quality fine wool, lambs, beef, apples and pears are also produced and there are an abundance of trout streams, stunning gardens and a wind farm.


Main Attractions

At the Crookwell Weaving Mill and Gallery, visitors can see professional weaver and tailor, Allan Craven demonstrate weaving from natural fibres, especially wool. Many items, including skirts, jackets, scarves and shawls are on display and some are for sale. Linder's Sock Factory, in the main street, is a great place to visit with socks at factory-direct prices.

There are many historic villages in the area, which were once associated with gold and bushranging. These towns, all north of Crookwell, include Roslyn, Tuena, Peelwood, Laggan, Bigga and Binda. Wombeyan Caves is located 60km NE and there are 5 caves open to the public. The Sheck Webster Lookout at Snowy Mount 42km NW on the Bigga Rd, offers a scenic view of the surrounding countryside. For experienced walkers, the climb up Decca Hill (at Grabine Lakeside SP, 65km NW) provides views of Wyangala Dam and the surrounding country.
