DESTINATION: Glen InnesThe historic town of Glen Innes is perched high in the New England Range and surrounded by rich, rolling countryside. In the past it was often the scene of bushranger activity. The surrounding area produces wool, sheep, beef, honey, timber and yields sapphires, tin and other minerals. Main AttractionsGlen Innes is also known for its beautiful parklands, restored heritage buildings, and as the home of the Australian Standing Stones. A walking tour brochure is available from the information centre. On the corner of McKenzie St and New England Hwy, is the Cooramah Aboriginal Cultural Centre. Visitors can see Aboriginal arts and crafts, historic artefacts and there is a restaurant with bush tucker. Land of the Beardies History House also houses quality pioneering and cultural displays. |

Fossicking for gemstones has attracted many visitors to the district. The information centre has details of what to look for, and where to find gemstones in public fossicking areas and the equipment required. Popular places include Emmaville, 39km NW and Torrington, 66km NW. Fishing for trout, perch and cod is popular and at Deepwater, 40km north of Glen Innes, fishing safaris can be booked. World Heritage-listed Washpool NP is located 75km NE and is a rainforest wilderness.
