DESTINATION: Grenfell

Grenfell

Grenfell is a charming little town situated at the foot of the Weddin Mountains, and 377km west of Sydney. The town's streets feature many buildings relatively unaltered since the 1880s. Grenfell was also the birthplace of Henry Lawson.

Main Attractions

The Henry Lawson Obelisk marks the site where Lawson was born in 1867. His father was a miner from Mudgee who brought his family to Grenfell to prospect for gold. The Grenfell Historical Museum holds some unique cricket photographs as the Stan McCabe family have lived in the town for some time. The museum is located in Camp St and is open weekends, 2pm-4pm, or by appointment. The most interesting place to picnic is at O'Brien's Lookout on the Cowra Rd. This is the place where gold was first discovered and there are walking tracks past the old workings and machinery. Grenfell Endemic Garden displays local plants; and The Town Drive takes in everything that is of interest in the town and a leaflet is available from the information centre.

Nearby attractions

Weddin Mountains NP covers a range of hills 19km SW of Grenfell. This large, natural area provides sanctuary from the surrounding agricultural land for many indigenous plants and animals. Ben Hall's Cave, the park's most popular attraction, was used by Hall, Johnnie Gilbert, Frank Gardiner and other members of the bushranger gang as a shelter and a place to hide their spoils. There are walking trails and 2 lookouts in the park but no other facilities.
