DESTINATION: GriffithDesigned by Walter Burley Griffin, Griffith is the largest centre in the rich agricultural Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area. Famous for its citrus crops, Griffith is one of the largest wine and vegetable production areas in the country. More than 70% of New South Wales' wines are produced here. Main AttractionsThe Griffith Food and Wine Festival is held every Easter to celebrate the harvest. There are champagne breakfasts, country music shows, wine tastings, banquets, wine auctions, a street procession and the Venetian Carnival, held on the main irrigation canal. Griffith Regional Art Gallery is housed in the old Soldiers Memorial Hall, a 1930s Art Deco building. The gallery has a growing collection of Australian-designed jewellery displayed in one gallery, while touring exhibitions from all over Australia are in another. The gallery is located in Banna Ave, and is open Tues-Sat, 10.30am-4.30pm. |

Most popular photosNearby attractionsCocoparra NP is 30km NE of Griffith and can be reached via the Whitton Stock Route, the route taken by Cobb & Co coaches in the early days. The spring wildflowers are spectacular and wildlife is abundant. Good views of the surrounding countryside can be seen from the summits of Mount Caley and Mount Brogden.
