DESTINATION: GunnedahSurrounded by rich agricultural land, this modern country town lies on gentle sloping terrain on the southern side of the Namoi River. The livestock industry is important to the town: Gunnedah Saleyard handles the largest cattle sales in New South Wales. Main AttractionsThe Gunnedah district has one of the largest and healthiest koala populations west of the Great Dividing Range. They can be seen in the trees around town. Standing in Anzac Park is the life-sized equestrian statue commemorating Gunnedah's link with the poet Dorothea Mackellar. The Gunnedah Visitors Information Centre contains the Dorothea Mackellar wing: a collection of memorabilia associated with her family. In front of the State Office Block in Abbott St stands a memorial to Cumbo Gunnerah, a legendary Aboriginal warrior of the Gunn-e-dar people, who died in the late 1700s and was immortalised in Ion Idriess' book, The Red Chief. In Brock's Court, opposite the Town Hall, stands Gunnedah's Miner's Memorial Statue built (and dedicated in Nov 2000) in remembrance of the 20 miners who lost their lives in mining accidents since 1911. Being 125% life-size, the statue depicts a miner erecting a prop, with a symbolic broken shaft at his feet. |
