Inverell

Known as the Sapphire City, Inverell is one of the world's leading suppliers of these lovely gems. This New England town is set on the MacIntyre River and is the centre of a diverse rural district.


Main Attractions

Inverell's Pioneer Village contains an impressive collection of historic buildings relocated from the surrounding district. The museum realistically displays local history from 1840-1930. Original buildings include Paddy's Pub (1847), Grove Homestead (1840), Nullamanna Village Church (1901), Slaughter House Creek Bridge, a school, village hall, Railway Station and much more. The museum is open Tuesday to Saturday 10am-5pm; Sunday 10am-4pm; and Monday by appointment. The Town Walk, and Town and Country Drive leaflets are available from the information centre.

Nearby attractions

The DeJon Sapphire Centre is located 19km east on Glen Innes Rd. Here, visitors can see a working sapphire mine. Green Valley Farm, 36km SE, is home to Smith's Mining and Natural History Museum.
