DESTINATION: LeetonThe administrative centre of the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Area, Leeton is located 30km off the Newell Hwy. The first rice mill opened here in 1951 and Leeton is now the headquarters for Australia's rice industry, which exports rice to many Asian countries, including Japan. Main AttractionsThe Leeton SunRice Centre at Leeton Mill is open to the public and gives presentations at 9.30am and 2.45pm on weekdays. The Berri Juice Factory offers guided tours at 10.45am on weekdays. Toorak Wines and Lillypilly Estate, 2 local wineries, are open for tastings and sales Mon-Sat. Mountford Park, near the town centre, is a relaxing spot for a picnic. |

Approximately 23km west is the historic village of Whitton. Worthwhile visiting is the Court House and Historical Museum which is open 1pm-4pm on weekends and 10am-1pm on Tuesdays, or by appointment. Fivebough Swamp, on the outskirts of town, is a popular spot for birdwatchers. The sanctuary is an important feeding and breeding ground for over 149 species of migratory waterbirds.
