DESTINATION: Moruya

Moruya

On the Princes Hwy, 307km south of Sydney, this quiet, rural centre services the surrounding timber and cattle country and is the base for exploring many beautiful beaches and national parks.

Main Attractions

There are many beautiful old buildings of much historical interest. Moruya Museum preserves regional history, including that of the gold period at Mogo. Located in Campbell St, the museum is open weekends and holidays, 10am-4.30pm. Australia's Bush Orchestra is a natural bush theme park located 2km west of the town. It emphasises the spiritual side of life and features the Ironbark Walk, colourful birdlife and native animals.

Nearby attractions

Deua NP, inland from Moruya, is a rugged and interesting area. A belt of limestone running through the park has resulted in many caves. One of the park's major attractions is the Big Hole, a 96m chasm, which probably resulted from the collapse of a limestone cavern. Also interesting is the granite quarry, off North Head Dr on the north side of the river. Stone for the pillars and faþade of the Sydney GPO building was taken from here in 1872 and the quarry was reopened in 1924 to supply the granite for the Sydney Harbour Bridge pylons and the Cenotaph in Martin Place, Sydney. When the Depression hit in the 1930s, the quarry was again closed.
