Murwillumbah

A picturesque town, Murwillumbah spreads across the western bank of the Tweed River and up into the hills of the McPherson Ranges. Formerly a red-cedar timber town, it is now a service town for the sugarcane and banana-growing district of the Tweed Valley.


Main Attractions

The Tweed River Regional Art Gallery is home to the Doug Moran National Portraiture Competition, the richest portrait prize in the world. Past finalist and winning portraits are displayed. The gallery presents frequent exhibitions; open Wed-Sun, 10am-5pm.

Tropical Fruit World, a plantation with a family entertainment and fauna park, is located about 15km north of Murwillumbah. The park is open daily from 10am to 5pm. Pioneer Plantation, at Mooball, is a working banana plantation with an animal nursery, native gardens and tearoom. During the harvest season from July to November the Condong Sugar Mill opens for the public to see sugarcane being processed. The mill opens between 9am and 3pm but closes in wet weather. Murwillumbah is the gateway to 5 World Heritage-listed national parks: Mount Warning, Nightcap, Border Ranges, Lamington and Springbrook. Information is available from the NPWS World Heritage Rainforest Centre incorporated with the visitors information centre. In Mount Warning NP, a 4.4km walking track leads from Breakfast Creek to the summit for good all-round views.
