DESTINATION: OrangeThe sixth largest city in New South Wales, Orange is surrounded by fertile farming land that produces an abundance of fruit, wheat, wine grapes, sheep, cattle and pigs. Not known for its citrus, Orange does produce well over half the State's apples. Cherry, pear and stone-fruit orchards also thrive in the red soil. Main AttractionsWine tasting is a popular activity for those wanting to experience the cool-climate wines. A brochure on the wineries open to the public is available from the tourist office. The poet Banjo Paterson was born at Narrambla, near Orange in 1864. A memorial in Banjo Paterson Park, on the Ophir Rd, 5km east of Orange, marks his birthplace. Also worthwhile visiting are the Orange Botanic Gardens, located off Kearneys Dr, north of the city. They were first planted in 1981, and became established quickly. The Regional Art Gallery, in Byng St, houses a permanent art collection and also hosts touring exhibitions. |
