DESTINATION: ParkesThis Central Western town is surrounded by productive agricultural and grazing land. Parkes is an important bulkhead and wheat storage facility strategically placed on the state's north/south road and east/west rail links. Main AttractionsParkes' major bicentennial project involved the restoration of the former Bush-man's goldmine at Bushman's Hill Reserve, off the Newell Hwy. The main evidence of the mine's existence is an old chimney. Also in the reserve is an Aboriginal walkway, and picnic and BBQ facilities. The Henry Parkes Historical Museum is open daily and features pioneering and gold-mining items. The most impressive exhibit is Sir Henry Parkes' library, which contains some 1000 books. Panoramic views of the town, Goobang Valley and the Bumberry Mountains can be seen from the Shrine of Remembrance on Memorial Hill. |
