DESTINATION: TenterfieldThe northern gateway to the New England area, Tenterfield is the centre of a sheep- and cattle-grazing district. Autumn is a particularly beautiful time to visit as the banks of the Tenterfield Creek are covered with the gold and red leaves of the deciduous trees. Main AttractionsAt weekends and holiday times, Tenterfield can be explored by Cobb & Co coach, which is drawn by 4 horses. Or the town can be investigated by taking the Historic Walk. The brochure for this tour is available at the information centre. Trains no longer run to Tenterfield Railway Station, and it is now the Railway Museum. Preserving railway memorabilia and history, the museum is open Thursday to Sunday and holidays, 10am-4pm. Handmade saddles are still made at the historic Saddlers Shop (1860s) in High St. The shop was made famous in Peter Allen's song, Tenterfield Saddler, commemorating his grandfather who was the saddler here for 50 years. |
