DESTINATION: Walgett

Walgett

Near the junction of the Namoi and Barwon rivers, Walgett is the centre of a vast pastoral area that stretches to the Queensland border.

Main Attractions

Fishing has been a popular local sport since 1902, when 3 bridge workers camped on the river near Walgett caught a 115kg cod. Murray cod and golden perch are 2 of the many types of fish to be caught in the local rivers. Picnic and BBQ facilities are located in the Rotary Park at the southern side of town. The river walk, linking the levee on the east bank of the river to the stock crossing, is a very pleasant 2km round trip.

Nearby attractions

The opal-mining towns of Lightning Ridge, Grawin, Glengarry and the Sheepyards are within an hour's drive of the town. Lightning Ridge is the only place in the world where black opal is mined. Precious stones, including agate, jasper and topaz are also found in the surrounding area. Fossickers can venture out to the opal fields, but must remember these fields are undeveloped and there are no facilities. Narran Lake, a bird and wildlife sanctuary, is located 96km west of Walgett. There are no facilities, and visitors must get permission to enter.
