DESTINATION: Wingham

Wingham

A small rural town, Wingham services the rich dairying, timber and beef-cattle country of the Manning Valley. The town has been heritage-listed and is the oldest town along the Manning River, 13km upstream from Taree. A sawmill, an export abattoir, a horseshoe factory and a range of light engineering and service industries provide employment in the town.

Main Attractions

The Manning Valley Historical Museum is located in an attractive village square, surrounded by historical buildings and is worthwhile visiting. A self-guided historical walk through the town is also recommended and brochures are available from the museum. Located adjacent to the Manning River, Wingham Brush is a subtropical floodplain rainforest. There is a designated walkway where visitors can view giant Moreton Bay figs, which dominate the Brush, and see flying foxes, birds and native marsupials. A BBQ and picnic area is provided, and there is a boat-launching facility and a designated swimming area.

Nearby attractions

For a scenic drive north through dairying and beef-cattle country, it is worthwhile visiting the high country of Bulga Plateau and the beautiful Ellenborough Falls. The falls are 40km NW of Wingham and are signposted from the village of Elands. They plunge 200m; one of the longest single-drop falls in the Southern Hemisphere.
