DESTINATION: Woolgoolga Known to the locals as 'Woopi', Woolgoolga is a quiet North Coast town with lots of character and spectacular coastal views. It is the centre of a fertile rural district that grows bananas and vegetables. The town has an Indian influence as a result of the Sikhs, brought in to work the cane fields, who later became banana growers. Popular with the surf-fishing fraternity. Main AttractionsWide bays and sandy beaches line the coast and tourists come for the excellent surfing, swimming, snorkelling and scuba diving. Conditions are perfect for fishing and Woolgoolga Beach has a boat ramp used by anglers heading for the fishing grounds on the reefs off the beach and near the Solitary Islands. Here there is a marine reserve with a vast array of fish and magnificent dive sites. Other activities include horseriding, whale-watching, bushwalking and golf. Woolgoolga is home to the largest Punjabi Sikh community in Australia. Members of the community are always keen to give visitors an understanding of their religion and culture through tours of the Guru Nanak Temple, which sits at the entrance to the town. Shady picnic spots are located in the reserve on the edge of Woolgoolga Lake, a safe swimming spot north of town where canoes and pedal boats are available for hire. |
