Yass

A quiet town on the Yass River, Yass is close to where the Barton Hwy to Canberra meets the Hume Hwy. An interesting and historic town, Yass is the service centre for the surrounding country which is famous for its merino sheep studs.

Main Attractions

The area's history is represented by pioneer relics and historic photographs in the Hamilton Hume Museum. The museum is closed in winter and visitors should contact the tourist centre for opening times. The explorer Hamilton Hume and his wife bought Cooma Cottage in 1839. The weatherboard house, with its return verandah and fine cedar woodwork is now a National Trust property, open Thurs-Mon, 10am-4pm. The town drive includes a visit to the cemetery where Hamilton and Elizabeth Hume are buried.
