Daly River

Daly River Easily accessed from Darwin, this area is a popular destination for fisherman and easy weekend trips. The Daly River settlement has a population of around 560 and is located 110 kilometres west off the Explorer’s Way (Stuart Highway). The road is fully-sealed from Darwin and Katherine and no permits are required. The Daly River crossing was traditionally a meeting place for Aboriginal people to trade and hold ceremonies. By the end of the 1800s European farmers, missionaries, miners and pastoralists had arrived. Today the Nauiya Nambiyu community on the banks of the river is home to about 300 indigenous and non-indigenous people.

They run the respected Merrepen Fine Art Gallery and hold an Aboriginal arts and cultural festival every May or June. The festival includes art sales and an auction, traditional music and dance, bush tucker displays and a football and sporting carnival.

The Daly River itself is a picturesque tidal river, home to both freshwater and saltwater crocodiles and a plentiful source of barramundi. Bamboo Creek and Horseshoe Billabong are gorgeous spots to picnic and enjoy the company of rare birds and wallabies. Accommodation catering to all types of budgets is available at the Daly River Pub and Caravan Park, the Banyan Farm Tourist Park, Daly River Highway Inn and the historical Daly River Mango Farm.

Lying 310km from Darwin, Katherine is a centre for beef-cattle properties, produce farms and the Tindal RAAF Base. Katherine is also the gateway to Nitmiluk National Park. Renowned Katherine Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park, 29km SE, can be viewed by canoe, flat-bottomed tour boat, scenic flight or helicopter. Edith Falls, 62km to the north, is also in Nitmiluk National Park and worth a visit. more
