DESTINATION: Gregory NP

Just out of town is the Northern Territory's second-largest national park - Gregory - which showcases the transition zone between the Territory's tropical and semi-arid regions.

It should top the Territory's hidden-treasure list for its scenery and landscapes - heavenly gorges, amazing sandstone formations and escarpments, monsoon rainforests, eucalyptus bush, clumps of yellow spinifex and unusual boab trees.

Main Attractions

Main attractions in Gregory NP Park include significant traces of Aboriginal culture, European exploration and pastoral history. You'll get the most out of exploring this area with a four-wheel drive (some of the sites are only accessible in a 4x4) and your walking boots for the picturesque trails

Nearby attractions

Nearby attractions to check out when visiting Gregory National Park: Gregory's Tree - an old boab tree nine kilometres off the Savannah Way with Augustus Gregory's inscriptions of his party's arrival and departure dates; Limestone Gorge - a postcard-like gorge with craters and dolomite formations around a permanent swimming hole (4x4 only); and Bullita Homestead, which is 56 kilometres from Timber Creek and portrays its pastoral history with timber stockyards and the old homestead (camping available).

Lying 310km from Darwin, Katherine is a centre for beef-cattle properties, produce farms and the Tindal RAAF Base. Katherine is also the gateway to Nitmiluk National Park. Renowned Katherine Gorge in Nitmiluk National Park, 29km SE, can be viewed by canoe, flat-bottomed tour boat, scenic flight or helicopter. Edith Falls, 62km to the north, is also in Nitmiluk National Park and worth a visit. more
