Pine Creek

Pine Creek, 90km NW of Katherine at the junction of the Kakadu and Stuart hwys, was a goldrush town in the 1870s. Still a gold-mining town, it has one of the largest open-cut gold mines in the Territory.

Main Attractions

The town contains historic buildings and reminders of the goldrush days; Miners Park, the Museum in Railway Tce, Mine Lookout, Gun Alley Gold Mining and Old Timers Rock Hut. Try your luck at some of the sites; fossicking for gold is permitted under licence. Bird Park displays tropical birds in a lush setting. The Railway Station Museum contains the veteran steam train used in the film adaptation of We of the Never Never.
