Tennant Creek

Tennant Creek is one of Australia's most isolated towns, 506km north of Alice Springs on the Stuart Hwy. A charming modern town, it is the country's third largest gold producer.


Main Attractions

The old Australian Inland Mission, built of prefabricated corrugated iron in 1934, and Tuxworth Fullwood House, a WWII army hospital and now a museum, are 2 places of interest on the town's heritage walk. Aboriginal arts and crafts are sold at Anyinginyi Congress Art Gallery in Paterson St. Jurnkurakurr Mural is a community project illustrating both men's and women's 'Dreaming'.

Nearby attractions

Mary Ann Dam, 5km NE, offers shady picnic areas, swimming and boating; a pleasant surprise in an arid landscape. The old Telegraph Station still stands, 12km to the north. The Pebbles, in a desert 16km NW, glow red at sunset. Attack Creek Historical Reserve, 73km north, marks a confrontation between explorer John McDouall Stuart and local Aboriginal people. A tourist drive 1.5km east along Peko Rd takes visitors to Battery Hill Regional Centre and Gold Stamp Battery, which features an underground mine and a mining museum. Guided tours are conducted daily. Bill Allen Lookout provides district views. Travel a further 106km south on the Stuart Hwy, to a collection of unusual and magnificent granite boulders called the Devil's Marbles; of spiritual importance to Aborigines, they are one of the Territory's top tourist attractions.
