Barcaldine

Located in the heart of a vast wool-growing and cattle-raising district, the town is 108km east of Longreach. Barcaldine is known as the 'Garden City of the West'.


Main Attractions

Mad Mick's Funny Farm offers tours of 9 restored and refurnished settlers' buildings and old shearing sheds. Hand-reared wildlife includes kangaroos and emus. There are wool-shearing demonstrations and Billy tea and damper lunches are available. The farm is located on the cnr of Pine and Bauhinia sts. Barcaldine and District Folk Museum houses a collection of memorabilia and is located on the cnr of Gidyea and Beech sts. The Tree of Knowledge is a ghost gum which stands in Oak St. In 1891, political history was made when 400 striking shearers gathered beneath this tree for a series of meetings, out of which the Australian Labour Party was formed. The Australian Workers' Heritage Centre is located in Ash St. Centred around a billabong, there are heritage buildings with displays of art and history, an offering to the achievements of working men and women. Barcaldine has several National Trust buildings, including the Masonic Lodge and Anglican Church.
