DESTINATION: Bargara

Bargara

This popular surf beach is the site of the world's first artificially created surfing point-break. Located 13km east of Bundaberg, Bargara is the largest and closest of Bundaberg's seaside townships.

Main Attractions

A temperate climate and year-round sunshine provide ample opportunities to swim, surf, windsurf and sail at Kelly's and Nielson Park beaches. Bundaberg Surf Lifesaving Club patrols both beaches, but Kelly's is more attractive to families with small children due to its calm-water swimming area known as Money's Creek. Excellent diving and snorkelling is available just off Bargara Beach. Coral diving sites here are some of the closest to the Australian mainland.

Nearby attractions

Panoramic views of the cane fields and ocean can be seen from The Hummock, an extinct volcano and the highest point in the district. A boardwalk travels through a patch of Wongarra Scrub; the last of the area's original vegetation; to the lookout. Mon Repos Turtle Rookery, Australia's best-known and most accessible sea turtle rookery, is a few kilometres north of town. Loggerhead, flatback, green and leatherback turtles come ashore after dark to lay their eggs. The nesting and hatching season occurs from November to March. Guided walks are conducted each night during this time.
