DESTINATION: BlackallLocated 106km south of Barcaldine and 969km NW of Brisbane, Blackall, on the Barcoo River, is at the centre of sheep-farming country. It is also the site of the states first artesian boredrilled in 1815. Main AttractionsA replica of the original Black Stump for this area is located in Thistle St. The tree stump was used as a key reference point when the area was surveyed in 1886. The Jackie Howe Memorial, on the cnr of Short and Shamrock sts, commemorates this shearers record set in 1892, when he blade-sheared 321 sheep in 7hrs and 40mins. This astonishing record remained until 1950, but then it was only broken by the use of mechanical shears. |

The Blackall Wool Scour is considered the most complete relic of the wool-scouring industry in Queensland. Located 5.5km north of town, the steam-driven scour was built in 1906. Guided tours are offered daily April-Nov, and by appointment at other times through the visitor information centre. Idalia NP is 100km SW of town and covers 1440km. The park is best known as the home of the rare and endangered yellow-footed rock wallaby.
