DESTINATION: BundabergSurrounded by sugarcane fields, this city, which has many fine examples of Queensland architecture, is the southernmost approach to the Great Barrier Reef. Bundaberg, 368km north of Brisbane, is an important centre in the rich Burnett River plains. The Burnett River runs through the city and flows out into the ocean 11km beyond Bundaberg. Main AttractionsAlexandra Park and Zoo is on the riverbank in Quay St; admission to the zoo is free. The Bundaberg Rum Distillery is located next to Millaquin Sugar Mill. Tours of the plant show all aspects of the rum-making process. The distillery visitors centre, Spring Mill House, is a restored plantation house containing a museum, souvenir shop and tasting bar. Schmeiders Cooperage and Craft Centre, located near the distillery, offers an insight into local arts and crafts with glassblowing and wood-working demonstrations. The Botanical Gardens, in Mount Perry Rd, also contain Hinkler House, home of aviator Bert Hinkler and now a pioneer aviation museum; Bundaberg Historical Museum; and the Fairymead House Sugar Museum, which showcases the story of the sugar industry. Close to the gardens is Tropical Wines, which offer free tastings of fruit wines. |

There are many coastal and hinterland self-drive tours to explore. Whale-watching boat trips are available mid-August to mid-October. Mon Repos CP is 15km NE and contains the largest and most accessible mainland sea turtle rookery in Australia. Turtles nest Nov-Jan and hatch Jan-March. Lady Elliot and Lady Musgrave islands are easily accessible from Bundaberg. The MV Lady Musgrave departs from Bundaberg Port Marina for Lady Musgrave Island. The island boasts the largest lagoon of the Great Barrier Reef. A permit is required for camping on the island. Lady Elliot Island is a 25min scenic flight from Bundaberg Airport. Island accommodation varies from tents to resort suites.
