DESTINATION: CalliopeCalliope, 20km SW of Gladstone, is a quiet rural town. Its principal industry centres on beef cattle, mainly Brahmans and Herefords. the town is the gateway to the Boyne Valley. National parks, creeks and trail riding are some of the attractions the region has to offer. Main AttractionsThe Calliope River is popular for fishing and camping. Calliope River Historical Village displays houses and cottages, a pub, schoolhouse, blacksmith's shop, railway carriage and station. These historic buildings are from all over the shire and have been relocated to this village. Markets are held in the village almost every month. The markets are famous for crafts and handmade goods. |

Lake Awoonga, south of Benaraby, supplies water to the region and also provides a recreation area and venue for watersports. There are nature walks with flora and fauna trails, picnic and BBQ facilities, a kiosk and caravan park. Cedar Gallery Artists Village, between Benaraby and Calliope, is worth a visit.
