DESTINATION: CharlevilleThe second largest town in Outback Queensland, Charleville is sited on the banks of the Warrego River in mulga country, 747km west of Brisbane. The town is the service centre for a prosperous sheep and cattle-raising district. Main AttractionsHistorical House, in Alfred St, was once the old Queensland National Bank building, displays include local memorabilia, a working steam engine and a rail ambulance. Historic Hotel Corones is a National Trust-classified building furnished in period-style. The hotel operates a carvery Mon-Sat nights and a guided tour of the hotel takes place at 2pm most afternoons. The bilby, one of Australia's most endangered species, is bred at the Charleville National Parks and Wildlife Office. Yellow-footed rock wallabies are also bred here. There are bilby tours on Wednesday, Friday and Sunday nights. The Charleville School of the Air is located in the distance education building in Parry St and is open for guided tours at 9.15am and 11am on school days. Teachers explain how they teach via radio correspondence and visitors can listen to a lesson being broadcast. The Outback Queensland Skywatch observatory, housed next to the airport's meteorology building, has nightly guided 'tours' of the sky, April-Oct, and 3 nights a week Nov-March, weather permitting, which is most of the time as the town has some of the clearest skies in the Southern Hemisphere.
