Chinchilla

Located in rugged country in the Western Darling Downs, 295km NW of Brisbane, Chinchilla is largely reliant on primary production from the excellent grazing and grain-growing pastures and on sawmilling.


Main Attractions

Chinchilla Folk Museum is a complex of 10 buildings, including the original town gaol and school; an 1880s slab cottage with authentic furnishings and displays of photographs, memorabilia and fashion of the times.

Chinchilla attracts many people to its gem and petrified-wood fossicking area; a stump of petrified wood is displayed outside the Cultural Centre. Fishing and canoeing on Charley's Creek and Condamine River are popular.
