DESTINATION: Collinsville

This coal-mining town lies 83km SW of Bowen. Modern open-cut mining by Thiess Contractors produces coal for export and Australian markets. The dry tropical climate offers a relaxed lifestyle.

Nearby attractions

From Collinsville it is a 45min drive to Bowen's beaches and 1.5hrs to the islands of the Whitsunday coast. Collinsville is a good base from which to explore the old gold- and coal-mining areas of Ukalunda, Normanby, and Mount Coolan where a hotel and a store still operate. Fossickers can spend hours in and around the area seeking fossilised wood, amethyst, jasper, agate and clear crystal. Fishing and camping are popular on the Bowen River.
