Cunnamulla

First settled in the 1860s, Cunnamulla is situated on the Warrego River, 815km west of Brisbane. This town boasts the largest wool-loading station on the Queensland railway network. Surrounding land supports 2 million sheep, as well as beef cattle, Angora goats and yields opals.


Main Attractions

The Botanic Gardens were only recently created. The first stage of the gardens, designed to showcase plants from the arid zone, was opened in 1998. The Heritage Guide is available from the information centre and takes visitors on a nostalgic tour of the town, walking in the footsteps of explorers and generations of locals. The Bicentennial Museum is located in John St. Lost Generation Arts and Crafts displays local Abor-iginal art and is located in Stockyard St. Centenary Park in Jane St offers picnic and BBQ facilities.

Wetlands in the area are home to abundant and varied birdlife. Yowah, 155km west of Cunnamulla, is an opal-mining town. There is a public fossicking area as well as a mine which is open Sun-Fri. A local tour operator in Cunnamulla also organises guided tours to Yowah, stopping at the mine and Yowah Opal Fields. The information centre has further details. Eulo, 65km west of the town on the Paroo River, is home to the Palm Grove Date Winery, unique in Australia because of its date-wine production and a variety of other date products which are offered for sale.
