Daintree

Once a timber town, the village of Daintree is tucked into a bend of the Daintree River and is surrounded by the McDowall Range. The village is 119km NW of Cairns.


Main Attractions

The area abounds with native animals, exquisite birds and tropical butterflies. Saltwater crocodiles are a feature of the creeks and tributaries of the Daintree River as well as the estuary. Glide through this paradise on a river cruise. Daintree Timber Museum displays local arts and crafts.

Daintree Rainforest Environmental Centre has a boardwalk through the rainforest and a 23m-high viewing platform; the centre is 11km to the north. Cape Tribulation is 35km NE and features both rainforest and reef. It is renowned for its sheer beauty with pristine creeks, fan palms, colourful orchids and butterflies and ancient rainforest trees, some of which are the oldest flowering tree species in the world. Walking trails in the area include the Dubuji Boardwalk, a 1.2km walk, and Murrdja Boardwalk at Noah Creek.
