DESTINATION: GattonLocated off the Warrego Hwy, 94km west of Brisbane and halfway to Toowoomba, Gatton is the business centre of the fertile Lockyer Valley. The valley is one of the most productive agricultural regions in Queensland. Industries include small crops, dairying, pork, beef, fruit and sawmilling. Main AttractionsLake Apex Fauna Sanctuary, 1km from the town centre, is an attractive picnic area with a wealth of bird species including pelicans and pygmy geese. It has a children's playground, BMX track and walking tracks. The town's visitor centre and a cafe are also in the park. Gatton Historical Village at the western end of the fauna sanctuary has a collection of historical buildings and more than 10 000 exhibits that trace the heritage of the Lockyer Valley. Gatton Potato Carnival is held in October. Heavy Horse Field Days are held at the showgrounds on the Labour Day long weekend in May. |

The town of Laidley, off the highway towards Ipswich, has many historic buildings, including Das Neumann Haus, which commemorates the contribution of German immigrants to the region. At the foot of the Toowoomba Range to the west of Gatton is the spa town of Helidon, also known for the high quality of its sandstone. Helidon Natural Springs Resort, on the Warrego Hwy outside Helidon, boasts a spa in every room. There are numerous scenic tourist drives throughout the Lockyer Valley. With 318 species on its official bird list, the valley attracts local and international birdwatchers.
