DESTINATION: GayndahOne of the oldest towns in Queensland, Gayndah was founded in 1848. Located 352km NW of Brisbane at a crossing on the Burnett River, it is known as the 'Orange Capital' of Queensland. It serves as a commercial centre for the surrounding district which produces cereal and grain crops, peanuts, fruit and beef cattle. Main AttractionsGayndah His-torical Museum, in Simon St, has a collection of relics and restored buildings, including a cottage built of bricks made from clay, taken from the banks of the Burnett River in 1864. From April to November, a range of citrus fruits are packed at the cooperative packing shed for interstate and overseas markets. Tours to some private orchards and packing sheds are possible if booked in advance through the information centre. The town hosts a bi-annual Orange Festival. |
