Located 546km NW of Brisbane, Gladstone is one of the busiest ports in Australia, handling more than 30 million tonnes of cargo each year. The warm subtropical climate, beaches, rivers and reef islands ensure Gladstone is host to an increasing number of tourists each year. Main AttractionsWith a coastline of beaches, headlands and estuaries, fishing is a popular activity and the fishing fleet regularly brings in catches of export-quality fish, bugs, prawns, sea scallops and mud crabs. It is worthwhile visiting one of the many fine restaurants in the city to taste the fresh seafood. The Gladstone Regional Art Gallery and Museum is located on the cnr of Goondoon and Bramston sts. Picnic and BBQ areas can be found in a number of city parks. Reg Tana Park includes Railway Dam which is inhabited by tame ducks, and closer to the city centre is Central Park, with a children's playground. Gladstone Marina is the departure point for fishing and scuba-diving trips on the Great Barrier Reef, and also to ferry visitors to the islands such as Heron Island. |

Most popular photosNearby attractionsAt the foot of Mount Biondello, 8km from the city centre, are Tondoon Botanic Gardens, which specialise in plants of the Port Curtis region and far north Queensland. Curtis Island, in Gladstone Harbour, features a coastline of remote beaches and rugged headlands. There is a campground, picnic facilities, a shop and lodge accommodation. A regular barge service leaves from Gladstone taking an hour to reach the island. Lake Awoonga, 30km south, is popular for watersports and offers picnic and camping areas and walking trails.
