Goondiwindi

Gateway to the Western Downs, this busy country town lies on the MacIntyre River. Goondiwindi is an administrative centre for the cotton, wheat, wool and beef industries.


Main Attractions

The old Customs House, built around 1850, became the Historical Museum in 1974. It exhibits local memorabilia and is open Wed-Mon, 10am-4pm. Displays include a primitive washing machine and the first operating table from the district hospital. Beside the river in Apex Park is the statue, Gunsynd, the Goondiwindi Grey, the famous racehorse who won 29 of his 55 races. MacIntyre Cotton Ginnery claims to be the largest of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere. Tours can be booked in season (April-July).

Nearby attractions

The Botanical Gardens of the Western Woodland are 1km west of the town. The 25ha gardens are being developed using plant communities native to the Darling Basin. The gardens offer BBQ facilities, toilets, a recreation area and an artificial lake. Self-drive tour brochures are available from the information centre. The Paper Mill, located at Boggabilla, is open for tours Mondays and Tuesdays.
