Gympie

The hub of the Cooloola region, Gympie is located 162km north of Brisbane. Gympie was established after gold was discovered in 1867. Today, it is the centre of the prosperous Mary River Valley agricultural district.

Main Attractions

There are many attractive parks, gardens, art galleries and interesting craft shops to explore in the town. The self-guided historical walk takes in several examples of 19th-century architecture. Exhibits at Wood Works Forestry and Timber Museum are run by the Queensland Department of Forestry and the Queensland Museum. There is a working replica of a steam-driven sawmill and a demonstration of early timber-cutting techniques. The museum is in Fraser Rd. The Valley Rattler is a steam train offering trips each Sunday and Wednesday from Gympie to Imbil.
